The Guy who just serviced our caravan showed me how to tell the age of the tyres on your car or caravan....It might be worthwhile checking new tyres you buy as well..as some tyres can sit around in storage depots for years after being made...Or so I've been told.....I have heard in the past of people buying new tyres for their caravn only to find they're past their "sell by date"... as it were, before they'd even used them....I change our van tyres every five years wether they look good or not.........

On the inner edge of the tyre wall nearest to the wheel rim you will see...DOT followed by some letters and numbers..(I don't know what these mean) ...then a small oval cartouche with four numbers in...these tell you the date when the tyre was made..

Our tyres say....DOT J3UB ( 2107 ) .......the 2107 is the relevant bit..it means the tyres were made in week 21 of the year 2007....

Just had a look at the car tyres as well...we have a 2008 car with "old" 2006 tyres on it..MMMMM

Well here is some strange info for you.
In the UK a new car can be up to 3 years old before its registered ( it used to be 5 years ), in the rest of Europe its 1 year from date of completion. That's why you see a lot of preregistered cars in garages.
Makes you think if you really are buying a new car...

Ah.........thanks for that Capt....so that probably explains why my nice new car had "old" tyres on....So in reallity maybe its a 2006 not a 2008 and had probably sat in a storage compound waiting for us to come along and buy it....

Still a Brilliant tow car though...and we paid a very good price for it....so can't complain

I got a Nissan Terrano imported from Belgium, direct from Nissan, preregistered 2 months old for £12,000 retail price £21,000 at Nissan UK (it came with a 3 year UK Nissan warranty ). I sold it on 2 years later for the same price.

Japanese imports are weird as I was looking into getting one, most of the imports are vehicles that have failed the MOT in Japan (due to vehicle emissions regulations being so strict) BUT pass a UK one no problem.

£12k now that is a good price...We looked at a New Terrano ourselves about 4 years ago but the price of the one we were wanting was silly...so we settled for an Xtrail tdi instead...It did the job at the time ,but not heavy enough for this van....

I have a Nephew lives in Japan..and I vaguely seem to recall something about cars over there having to be scrapped at three years old..something or other to do with stimulating the home car market..so a lot of low mileage engines and transmissions being exported to the rest of the world.......such a waste of resources...Not sure how they offset that against emmissions..........
